Final Fall Storytimes at Cherrydale

Please join us for the final fall storytimes at the Cherrydale Branch Library to be held on Monday, Nov. 16.

Raise a Reader meets at 10:15 a.m. and Read to Me: Family Stories is at 11:15 a.m.

Also please take a couple of minutes to complete the Library's Preschool Storytime Survey to help us plan our upcoming programs. The survey is available online or at the Library.

Cherrydale's Chestnut Tree

Have you ever noticed how big the chestnut tree is at Cherrydale Branch Library?

Neighbors tell us that this tree is the offspring of another chestnut tree that lived on the land where the 7-11 currently stands on Lee Highway. We also know that the nearby Gulf Branch nature center houses a working forge, and after reading Longfellow's poem The Village Blacksmith we wonder, could there ever have been a working blacksmith here?

We want to learn more about the tree's history. If you have any stories about the tree, please tell them to us (you can use the comment section below)!

"Within the Pages" Puppet Show at Cherrydale

Join us Saturday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m., for the fantastic, wordless puppet show, "Within the Pages: Two Tales of Reading Magic," presented by Arlington puppeteer Cecelia Cackley and Washington DC actress Rachel Manteuffel:

Sophie wanders into a library one day and discovers that she can travel into the books that she reads. But once she is inside, who can say what strange creatures she will meet? And will she ever be able to get out again?

Luke is much more interested in his Lego buildings than in reading the books his mother gives him. But a little dragon has escaped from one of the books and just may be able to change his mind.

Cherrydale Book Group: "Abandoned and Forgotten"

The next title for Cherrydale Branch Library's book group is Abandoned and Forgotten: an orphaned girl's tale of survival during WWII, a memoir by Evelyne Tannehill.

The book club meets at the Cherrydale Branch at 7:30 p.m., on the second Monday of each month (no meeting in October) and is facilitated by volunteer Joan Marik. Newcomers are always welcome, no matter when you read the book! Ask about available copies of Abandoned and Forgotten, and later book group books, at the Cherrydale circulation desk, or call 703-228-6330.

Meet Cherrydale's New Branch Manager

We are pleased to welcome our new Branch Manager, Cathy Robinson, to Cherrydale Branch Library this week.

Cathy has been with Arlington County Library for nearly 20 years, and has previously been Branch Manager at Westover, Shirlington and (most recently) Aurora Hills. She brings with her a wealth of experience in connecting customers with what they're looking for, and a talent for making the Library an attractive and welcoming environment. Welcome to Cherrydale, Cathy!
